My name is Anne’ka. I’m a wife, a mother of three girls, two boys and a proud grandma. I’m currently working on completing my Bachelors Degree in Health Care Administration with a Minor in Psychology at University of Michigan. I work full-time and work part-time for my business Natural Me 2! People always ask, “How do you manage it all,” and my answer is always by the grace of God! To get me through it all, I like to keep my favorite quote in mind by Steve Jobs “ The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.”
To inspire non-African American foster and adoptive parents to learn about natural hair care and to encourage their African American children to wear their crown with pride.
The purpose of Natural Me 2 is to create a comfortable and inviting environment to teach non-African American foster and adoptive parents how to manage their African American children hair. To guide them on this journey of learning and to help them build the confidence in managing their child’s crown.
When I was younger, my childhood best-friend was in foster care and I recall how she felt about the way she looked. She cared about her appearance, as many kids do, so it was important for her to be presented in a way that she felt her best! Being with her almost everyday as a child and witnessing what she experienced, created this passion within me to want to help children that are in the foster care community feel their best!
Over the years, I’ve noticed a need for guidance with learning the basics of managing African American natural hair. So, in April 2016, I decided to contact Michigan Department of Human Health Services (MDHHS), Child Services Department, to ask if they seen a need for this service in the fostercare system and they said, yes! I will be forever grateful to Ingham County MDHHS, for seeing the importance of providing an opportunity for parents to learn about natural hair care and for giving me the opportunity to share what I know and to connect with parents who are willing to learn and grow.
Although, I’m not a natural hair guru, I am someone who can share what I know and my experiences with maintaining natural hair over the years. I have been natural my entire life, but like many in high school, I wanted to fit in with the other girls who had straight hair. So, I pressed my hair with a hot comb and flat iron, until my hair started to break out in my 20’s and then I started to realize looking like everyone else wasn’t for me, so I knew it was time for a change. In my mid 30’s I began to seek guidance in what to do next, so that’s when I found www.currlynikki.com and www.natural85.com, these were the only two websites that helped me through my natural hair journey. I also, connected with a family friend, who taught me how to two strand twist and the rest is history!
My mom has always taught my sister and I to embrace who we were, because that’s the way God made us. We were raised in a household of no make up and no perms, those two things were absolutely not allowed. When I had my three daughters, they were raised the same way, which has been another journey within itself. Many would think my daughters and I hair would be the same, but in fact they’re very different, which gave me more experience with managing different hair textures, because after all, all hair isn’t the same.
This has been a beautiful journey so far and I hope to continue to be in the space of others who are willing to learn the importance of managing their child natural hair, for it is their crown and we must encourage them to wear it proudly!
The passion behind our work, is seen through connections with the families that become our clients. We provide hands on experiences in a judgement free environment. We believe that natural hair maintenance can be obtained with love, patience and a good comb!
Our service provides a judgement free environment that encourage parents to ask uncomfortable questions, without feeling self-conscious about asking them. Our goal is to guide foster and adoptive parents throughout this journey of learning. As with anything, it takes time and patience to learn something new, but as long as you have a desire to be educated and willing to find resources on natural hair care, you will be able to master it easily!
