Not only is Anne'ka a talented hairstylist who creates beautiful styles that last, she is patient, encouraging and kind. As a white mom caring for a black daughter, no website or book or blog could teach me the things she was able to by allowing me to watch her and ask her questions and practice right a long side her. When I first started working with Anne'ka a year ago I now know I was making a lot of hair care mistakes, but she never made me feel that way. She gently modeled and shared tips and let me know it's a normal learning process. My husband and I have come to count on Anne'ka as an important part of our foster care team of support because of the time we save when she does hair and also because her willingness to do it at our house or hers allows us a little respite and gives our daughter a chance to spend time with Anne'ka's family which she loves. My daughter would also like me to add that she likes it because Anne'ka has Netflix. Before we starting working with Anne'ka hair days were very stressful because of my skill level and because it seemed that my daughter had a hard time trusting a mother figure in general, and especially a mother figure combing or parting or pulling. Working with Anne'ka took out the mother and intimacy complications and allowed our daughter to re-frame hair time as a positive experience. I am now happy to report that hair time as become valued special time for my daughter and I with generally no tears from either one of us.
